Location: The Lafayette Kitchen + Events, Bay Area

Employment Type: Full-time

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7am - 3pm

Job Description:

As the Urban Lunch Prep Cook, you will play a pivotal role in preparing food daily for local schools in our community. Reporting to the Urban Lunch Head Chef, you will work closely with the Urban Lunch team to from preparation to execution of all daily breakfast, lunch and pm snacks.

Essential Responsibilities:

Stock and set up workstations with needed tools and supplies

Ingredient Preparation (wash, peel, fabricate & portion)

Label, date, and store prepared items correctly (FIFO – first in, first out)

Mise en Place kits for Line Cooks/Chef to cook

Follow recipe into completion from mise en place ingredients to baking/cooking

Portion and packout meals for schools by homeroom + school according to daily/weekly orders

Maintain cleanliness of prep stations and tools

Follow proper sanitation and hygiene practices (washing hands, wearing gloves/hairnets)

Sanitize surfaces, cutting boards, and equipment regularly

Dispose of waste, compost and recycling properly

Adhere to health, safety policies and procedures

Qualifications:

Food Safety Knowledge: Understanding of safe food handling, sanitation, and hygiene practices (must have CA Food Handler Card).

Knife Skills: Ability to safely and efficiently chop, dice, slice, and portion ingredients.

Stamina & Physical Ability: Can stand for long periods, lift 25–50 lbs, and work in a fast-paced environment.

Time Management: Able to complete prep tasks efficiently and prioritize multiple duties.

Teamwork: Works well with chefs, line cooks, and other kitchen staff.

Communication: Follows instructions clearly; able to ask questions when clarification is needed.

Attention to Detail: Consistency in portion sizes, cuts, and recipe requirements.

Adaptability: Comfortable with changing tasks and assisting where needed.

Additional Skills:

Familiarity with kitchen equipment (slicers, mixers, food processors, ovens).

Basic cooking techniques (blanching, roasting, steaming).

Multitasking ability in high-volume operations.

Prior experience in a commercial kitchen.
